Below is a preview from our first Shooting Equipment article...

I met the Benoits at a show in Scranton, Pennsylvania, two years ago. Lanny was there, and I came up to him and told him I wanted to shake his hand as I have admired his family all my life. He looked at me and in only the way Lanny Benoit can said, “I know who you are, you make rifles.” From there a friendship was born and in time we began working together to develop them a hunting rifle which was exactly what they wanted.

Every step of the way it is a privilege to work with them. I enjoy it immensely because we come from similar backgrounds and ethics where you just treat people right. Also, to a build a rifle for them, one that would meet their specifications and be in their hands every day, is really an honor for me as a gun maker. To be able to produce the gun for the public is another privilege all-together.

Many hunters out there might be asking themselves why they need a custom rifle. The truth is some of you don’t, but many of you do. One reason is what I like to call the “surgical shot.” With a gun, a hunter might think his gun is pretty good if it can shoot a 2-inch group at a hundred yards. To me that 2-inch group means that he has a 2-inch hole with which he can miss a deer. How many times in a hunting situation do you have to pick an opening and thread a needle through a hundred yards of brush to make a shot at a moving whitetail? This is real deer hunting in thick woods we are talking about. That same 2-inch group can become a 2-inch liability pretty quickly in that “surgical” situation.

There are many hunters out there who can actually out-shoot their gun. Meaning that their basic abilities are better than their guns can handle. They might be on the bull’s-eye every time off-hand at 200 yards, but the gun can only produce a 3-inch group. In my opinion this should never happen. A gun should always be able to be better than the shooter, whether it is in a 1,000-yard shooting competition or a weekend deer hunter.
